The Oscars: and the online buzz award goes to…
This weekend the 91st edition of the Academy Awards will take place. The show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel is a much discussed topic online in the run-up to it. We investigated which actors, actresses and film titles are the biggest contenders based on the data volume from our media monitoring tools. We dived into the online buzz around the nominees in these three categories. Will the volume of messages match the outcome of the Oscar winners?
Frequently used hashtags on Twitter
On Twitter the Oscars are hot and happening! The fanbase tweets mainly about #oscars2019 and #oscarnoms, this is shown by the hashtag cloud from the OBI Brand Monitor.
It’s striking that the Marvel superhero movie Black Panther is often mentioned. This article by Vox explains why the film can be an Oscar winner. The Academy tweeted a funny compilation of the reactions of nominated actors which got a lot of attention:

Rami Malek and Bradley Cooper most frequently mentioned actors
In the category best actor it is striking that the male leading role of “A Star is born” Bradley Cooper wins over Rami Malek, who plays Queen singer Freddy Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Christian Bale, nominated for his role in Vice, follows with a third position.
Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) are the least discussed of the five. It seems that it will be a battle between about who can best sing and act.
Lady Gaga by far the most talked about actress online
For the first time we see Lady Gaga in the leading role of a film. In the music film “A Star is Born” she shines alongside Bradley Cooper in the role of Ally:
Showing the audience that she cannot only sing, but also act, she wins place 1 of our Buzz-Awards. The second place is surprisingly not taken by the two top actresses Glenn Close (2nd place) and Olivia Colman (3rd place), but by the Mexican primary school teacher Yalitza Aparicio. Melissa Mccarthy (5th place) attracts the least attention.
And the online buzz award goes to…..
The Golden Globes are often a prediction of how the Oscars will go. This year Bohemian Rhapsody won the Golden Globe for best film. Last year, the Musical “La La Land” was very successful and this trend is reflected in the nominations. Nevertheless, online and on social media the most attention goes to Black Panther (24%).
